Villa Monterey Historical Preservation Plan

Villa Monterey Units 1-7 Historic District Preservation Plan

  1. As you are aware we were officially labeled a Historic District on June 11, 2011 by the City of Scottsdale. With this designation comes some responsibilities to maintain some standards and preserve the character defining features that enabled our area to be awarded this label.
  2. The City of Scottsdale under the direction of the Historic Preservation Officer (Steve Venker) has formed a committee with a representative of each of the seven HOAs included in the Villa Monterey Historic District to create the preservation plan.  This plan includes several chapters that address all character-defining features at the front of each home (and exposed side of the homes on corner lots) as well as the common area of each of the seven Villa Monterey. This plan does not supersede the HOA Declarations (CC&Rs), Bylaws, rules or regulations but require an additional layer of approval for any changes made to the above-mentioned areas of our community.
  3. Homeowners wishing to make any changes must follow the guidelines to preserve the form, mass and wall materials of the homes, as well as the paint colors, roof, window, door, trim and details along with landscaping, driveway, carports, etc. to maintain the historic look and feel of the community. Any changes being requested must first meet the approval of the Unit’s HOA Board and then the HOA approval must be submitted to the City of Scottsdale.  Some of the minor change requests (like painting the exterior of the home or replacing a tree or bush) will be an administrative approval by the city staff and more substantial changes will require the approval by the City of Scottsdale Historic Preservation Commission.
  4. The group meeting to create the Historic Preservation Plan hopes to complete the revisions to the plan before winter.  The plan will then be shared and reviewed by each HOA Board. When finalized by the City of Scottsdale Historic Preservation Commission, the plan will be shared with all homeowners affected by the plan.  In the meantime, all requests for changes must still go through the HOA Board and the City of Scottsdale.
